      Ignition Interlock Cost

How Much Does an IID Cost?

Following a drunk driving offense, many offenders are required by the state to install an ignition interlock device, or IID. Interlocks are also known as car breathalyzers. The devices are wired into a vehicle’s ignition so the offender is required to take and pass a Breath Alcohol Content, or BrAC, test before they can start their vehicle. Failures and tampering attempts are reported to the state’s monitoring authority.

There are several costs involved with installing an ignition interlock device, and offenders are responsible for the cost of installing and leasing the device. Occasionally, there are rebate offers in various states that can save money on IID installation costs. Some states also offer financial assistance to customers in need.

      Set Up/Installation

Installation costs may vary depending on your state, vehicle type, and device type. Typically, IID installation will cost between $70 and $150. At your installation appointment, technicians will show you how the device works and provide you with a certificate of installation.

      Monthly Lease

Again, IID costs may vary by state, but the monthly lease cost will be outlined in your Intoxalock lease. Typically, monthly costs are between $60 and $90. Intoxalock offers very flexible payment options. Customers can pay monthly, weekly, or pay several months of their lease up front.

      Calibration

You will need to return to a service center on a regular basis (often every 30, 60, or 90 days depending on your state) to have your IID calibrated. Typically, there are no costs associated with calibration. If additional service is required, there may be an associated cost.

Installation Cost for an Ignition Interlock Device

An ignition interlock device, also frequently referred to as a car breathalyzer, ranges in cost between $70 and $150 for installation. This fee is a one-time fee paid at the start of your lease period for the device to be installed into your vehicle. This fee is paid directly to the service center for the work done to complete your installation. The range of IID installation costs can fluctuate due to the following factors:

      • Year, make and model of vehicle the device will be installed in
      • Specific technological features of the vehicle such as auto start
      • Shipping fees
      • Any specific fees or taxes in accordance with state laws

      Flexible Lease Payments for IIDs

Ignition interlock devices are leased (or rented), not purchased. Intoxalock allows for either monthly or bi-weekly payment options, to help you manage the costs associated with ignition interlock devices. Payment options will need to be set up during the account set-up process in order to appear in the payment section of the Intoxalock Mobile App or in MyAccount.

IIDs typically cost between $60 and $90 per month. There are also some states that offer financial assistance for those who qualify.

The cost of your individual monthly lease payment will depend on the following factors:

      • Length of time you need your device
      • The model of device you are required to have according to your state law (GPS, camera, real-time reporting)
      • The frequency of compliance reporting required by your home state
      • Any specific fees or taxes in accordance with state laws

      Other Interlock Fees

All associated fees are outlined in your lease. This includes the monthly lease costs as well as any incidental fees you may or not be charged. Potential fees include:

      • Lockout fee: Lockouts happen when you fail multiple BrAC tests in a row, or attempt to tamper with your device. If you are locked out, you may be charged a $75 fee so support can remotely unlock your device.
      • Vehicle switch fee: Your interlock term may be months or years. If you need to switch your interlock device, a $30 switch fee will apply.
      • Late equipment fee: Once your interlock term ends, you are required to return your device to your installation center. There is a $2 per day late fee for every day interlock equipment is not returned once your term has ended.

Comparing the Cost of an IID to Public Transportation or Ride Shares

Depending on the state, the cost of a monthly lease for an IID can range from $60 - $90. Local bus passes can range in costs depending on the city, the reliability of arriving on time, and require a lot of travel time to arrive at one’s destination. In one large metropolitan city, an all-day bus pass runs $5 per person within the city routes. For the suburbs in the same city, rates can run up to $6.25 for just a one-way trip. If you are considering using a taxi or ride share service such as Uber or Lyft, you could also incur a higher expense than with an IID lease. During morning commute hours within a large city, a Lyft ride can run about $23 or more before tip, going one-way. Using a ride share app in larger cities could cost $50 or more per day if traveling during common commute hours.

Peace of Mind with Intoxalock Device Protection Plan

Ignition interlock devices are expensive to purchase outright, costing thousands of dollars. This is one reason why Intoxalock IIDs are leased by customers. If the device is damaged, tampered with, or broken, the customer will be responsible for the cost of replacing it. This can cost up to $3,000 or more depending on the type of device, a significant financial burden.

However, Intoxalock offers a Device Protection Plan that will cover you in the event of a car accident, natural disaster, theft, or accidental damage. For $10 a month, this plan will cover the cost of a replacement device. To add a protection plan for your device, contact Intoxalock at 888-288-7884.

*Please note that device protection is not available in Georgia or Washington.

Financial Assistance Available to Qualified Customers

Customers are required to cover the cost of their own ignition interlock device installation and lease after being mandated to install an IID. This can be difficult for some customers who are struggling financially. Financial assistance is available in many states for customers who need help to pay their interlock lease. If you are unsure if you qualify, an Intoxalock state specialist can help you determine next steps. The criteria and process are different in each state, and Intoxalock can help guide you through the process.
